The joy of crewel embroidery is using different stitches and exciting colors. The word crewel means "wool threads." For a truly beautiful piece of crewelwork embroidery use 2-ply fine (English) wool on linen. Linen is best for chair seats. Other fabrics can be used if they have a fairly open weave. You can use mending wool on ticking and denim or heavy rug yarn on a piece of burlap. Also, the strands of wool can be separated and used singly if you want to work with greater delicacy than can be achieved with 2 or 3 strands. The best needles to use are a crewel needle #3 (fine English wool), chenille needle #18 (heavy wool, and a rug needle (for burlap).
These designs can also be hand embroidered using traditional 6-strand cotton embroidery floss!
