Description

Recycle and Reuse! Denim Redesign includes 20 projects for creating and customizing denim jeans into wearables and accessories. Create altered clothing! Repurpose denim jeans and overalls from your closet or thrift shop and make your own one-of-a-kind fashions. Learn new techniques including applique, needle felting, image embellishment, and yarn collage. Customize purses, jeans, jackets, aprons and skirts.

A symbol of American culture, denim, is amazingly versatile. It can be repaired, altered, embroidered, and personalized. You can embellish and or stitch things on to it or rip it up. It is adaptable. You can make a statement without saying a word. Denim can make you distinctive. In fact by wearing denim, you can be whatever you want: feminine, youthful, a groupie, rustic, a leader or just plain hip!

This book introduces many different techniques for deconstructing and repurposing your denim wardrobe. We show you how to take ordinary well-worn denim jeans and overalls and make them into extraordinary one-of-a-kind skirts, purses, aprons, and quilts. Plain denim jackets are embellished with your favorite fabrics, heirloom embroidered linens, fibers and vintage images to create a new look for your old stand-bys. By using simple techniques easy enough for any level seamstress, you can redesign traditional denim pieces that you will enjoy in your everyday lifestyle.

Techniques described in this book include how to take a collage of assorted yarns and apply them to water-soluble stabilizer to construct new fiber fabrics and use them to embellish collars and cuffs of denim jackets. Use Treasured Threadz® vintage fabric panels to customize your denim wearables.

Using vintage aprons and buttons, lush fabric remnants, recycled denim scraps, fibers, quilting cottons, vintage images and decorative stitching you can transform any ordinary denim garment into an amazing piece of wearable art!

If you prefer a no-sew process, iron-on transfers work well when you want an image applied to denim.

However, images printed to fabrics allow more versatility. Most projects in this book use images printed to fabrics that are then stitched in place. Decorative stitching, beading, even iron-on rhinestones can be easily affixed to a printed fabric image. The art and additional embellishments make wonderful accents to denim surfaces. Create designer-style fashions for a fraction of the designer cost!
